Our handmade candles come in a variety of sizes, enhancing the warmth and style of your country home. To keep your candles burning longer and cleaner, follow these candle care tips.
So here's the good news is, it only takes a little time to give your candles the care they deserve. I've jotted down a simple list of candle care tips from start to finish to ensure a perfect burn every time.
How to Store Candles
Extend the Lifespan of Your Candles with Proper Storage Techniques
Maintain the quality of your candles by storing them in a cool, dark place like a cupboard or basement. All my candles live in my basement when they are not being used, the temps are consistent and it never gets too hot down there. If you don't have a basement, find a closet in an area of your home with consistent temps to store your candles.
If you notice condensation on the surface of your stored candles, it's a sign of frequent temperature changes. Use a paper towel to wipe them and find a spot with more consistent temperature.
When Burning Your Candles
Place Your Candle on a Heat-Resistant Surface
Of all our candle care tips, this might seem the most obvious. But you’d be amazed how easy it is to overlook.
How To Achieve the Perfect First Burn
The initial burn of a fresh candle is a crucial step in achieving an even burn.
When lighting the candle for the first time, make sure to allow the surface to melt completely. Putting it out too soon may lead to the formation of a hard wax rim that never melts, while the wick and central wax continue to burn down, causing tunneling.
To fully experience the magic of our candles, burn for 1-3 hours before extinguishing. Don't rush the process if you want to savor every moment of your handmade candles.
Give Your Candles Time - Each Burn Should Last 3-4 Hours
As I already stated, brief burn times may result in tunneling, but scented candles could also hold the fragrance, preventing the complete scent to emerge. And we all know how much we love our scented candles!
Another issue is allowing your candle to burn for too long. This may result in overheating, leading to thin wax, compromising fragrance oils, and emitting soot.
Keep Candles Away from Wind and Strong Drafts
Strong breezes can blow your candle out. Even a slight breeze from a draft, window, or air vent can make the candle burn quickly and unevenly. If the flame starts flickering, relocate your candle to a calmer area.
Extinguish with a Candle Snuffer
A candle snuffer helps extinguishing the flame without causing wax splattering or smoke. It preserves the candle's lifespan by gently putting out the flame.
Trim the Wick
If I have said it before, I'll say it again!! Before your next burn, use your wick trimmer to snip the wick to around ¼”. If you don't have one, you can find them here. One the other hand it's not a good idea to trim the wick below ¼” as a short wick may be extinguished by melted wax and it might not lite.
Clean Out Your Candle
Sometimes small particles of dirt or debris can find their way in your was, it's a good idea to clean this out by simply using tweezers to remove old wick trimming or other debris
You can also wipe your candle with a dry towel to remove soot, fingerprints, and other small particles to keep it looking sparkly good.
Properly storing, burning, and caring for your candles lets you enjoy them as much as possible for as long as possible. To find our seasonal and cowgirl candles head here to check out our selection
